Bye Bye Ars Technica

Hearing someone's voice can be an eye opener to what they're like, compared to the impression they give of themselves in a text medium, specially a live chat style text medium. That can be a double edged sword.

Ubuntu 12.04 Revisited

So I tried Ubuntu 12.04 on the netbook and kinda liked it. I've since reverted the netbook back to Crunchbang, Ubuntu and Unity aren't quite right for the netbook. This time, I was impressed enough with Ubuntu and Unity, that I switched the laptop to it. Surprised? Yeah, me too.

Are Albums Suitable For Digital Only Artists?

The traditional model for music artists to release their music to the public is to seed the public with a few singles, then follow with an album. This strategy is about scarcity and marketing, more than anything else. Is it suitable for digital only artists?

Initial Impressions Of Ubuntu 12.04

Every new final release of Ubuntu has me curious to try it. The previous three have left me underwhelmed, this time with 12.04 LTS it's a much better initial reaction. That has caught me by surprise. It could be in part from low expectations having been surpassed, I'm not sure.

End Credits Are A Relic Of The Linear Era

The media world has changed beyond all recognition. The gatekeepers are becoming increasingly irrelevant and we're shifting from pyshical to streaming in terms of how we consume media so why do we still have a leftover relic; the end credits?

Evening The Score In The FA Cup

Why don't we even the score a little bit to make FA Cup games between teams in different divisions more competitive and induce a few more shocks? Too many early round games are so mismatched that the big teams can play their entire 3rd team and still comfortably win. The small teams go into each game knowing they don't stand a chance of progressing, but an away draw to a big team gives them a valuable cash boost to invest with.

The FA Outsource Their PR To Hypnotoad

On this day in 1984, the English FA announced the man they always wanted to be the new England Manager; Harry Redknapp Roy Hodgson. All of the PR was carefully scripted bullshit, in the hopes of mass amnesia among the audience; welcome to the fish bowl Harry Roy.

The Transparency Of Ally McCoist

Every so often, something from one or other of the Old Firm disgusts me as a neutral. For the last few years it's been Neil Lennon's shouting at officials who don't give decisions in favour of Celtic, this time it's Ally McCoist outing SFA officials.

Exploring Markdown

For a while I've been eying a shorthand way to write mainly text content that will be displayed in HTML format, like a web browser. The ideal solution is to minimize the actual markup details while writing. This is where Markdown comes in.

If You Want Me To Share Your Content

The internet age is about people sharing content, sharing links to blog posts, forum posts, articles etc that they like, and that they think others would like. Often this is done in a very casual way. I've noticed a few things that really get in the way of that.

Softalicious Install Issues

I've noticed that when installing some applications from Softalicious, I try to log in and it won't let me. I go through all the "did I make a typo when installing? no I copied and pasted" options.

Open Respect

The sniping at each other from the higher ups at both RedHat and Canonical over who contributes more to what reminds me of a few things. A while back Canonical's Jono Bacon started something called Open Respect; why have people forgotten this?

Are Any Tesco Offers Genuine Money Savers?

Today I spotted some outrageous deception at my local Tesco in terms of promotions and value for money.  This is in addition to the "per 100g / per 1kg" deception they're still happily using. They promote "Price Drop" as items where you get a good deal? The devil is in the detail.

A Neat Little Niche Image Uploading Solution

I'm not one for sharing images all that often, most of the time when I do, I can throw them up here. Once in a while I need an anonymous one-time-only share for a PM or IRC. I always have to DuckDuckGo for sites, as I don't remember or favour any. There's a better way.

Why I Love Crunchbang

I've found my years using Linux veering heavily in favour of the Debian family. At different times I've run Debian, Ubuntu, Mint, AntiX and now find my laptop and netbook feels "at home" with Crunchbang. Linux has no vendor lockin, so the temptation to try something new is ever present. So why have I zeroed in on Crunchbang?

Copyright Infringement Is Not Content Theft

Today I found myself in a bit of a quandary. I had a simple screencast idea that didn't fit within the self imposed remit of the Digital Prism Screencast, but was worth doing and sharing. Here's my solution.

A New Addition To The Site

After yesterdays Katie and Silvia post, I figured it was about time I had a separate area of my site for images like this. A glance at the top menu will show an additional "Images" link.

Katie & Silvia On Crunchbang

Every so often I like to freshen up the look and feel of my laptop or netbook, I sometimes remember to post a screenshot or two to UnixPorn, this time I decided to go a little further.

Repairing Unified Folders In Thunderbird

Like many people, I use Thunderbird as my email client of choice, like many people, I have various email accounts for various purposes. I also have multiple Thunderbird profiles to keep things easy to manage. In theory, this means you can simply drop your .thunderbird folder into your /home/username and you're up and running; well not quite. Here's the finishing touch.

A Spring Revamp

I got a little bored of my previous theme, as cool as it is, so i decided a fresh look was in order. I didn't really have any ideas in mind of exactly what I was looking for, so for the first time in ages I found myself just browsing the themes section of Drupal.org to see what caught my eye. this is the result.

An Odd Bandwidth Issue & Solution

I've just encountered a conundrum that I can't explain, yet I've seen happen. My ISP is Plusnet, I'm very happy with them. I'd recommend them for both value and customer service. The other week they had some issues with one of their pipes, since then so have I. The pipes sorted themselves, my issue didn't.

I've noticed something on Twitter for a while but only looked into it today. Many people have profiles on various networks and because names are not always available, they have to settle for alternate names. This means it's not always obvious if it's someone you talk to on one network, with their alternate ID.

Ice Ice Baby & The Why Of Social Networks

Yesterday I had an encounter with some random stranger on Twitter that I thought I'd share. It led me to writing this post about why people use social networks. What is their aim, value does it have and what does it say about them?

Logical Extension To The Notification Bar In Android

After we discussed the idea of everything being an extension of everything else on the last episode of Crivins, and idea hit me for a logical extension to the notification bar in Android. I'm laying this out as prior art in case Apple or Microsoft suddenly claim it, patent it as unique and add it to the extortion racket.

Style Changes, Mastery Is Permanent

Like everything in life, years bring experience wisdom and useless hindsight. Some things click into place that explain or excuse your path and choices to get to where you are. Recently I've had another odd little piece of wisdom drop into place; John Lennon was a hindrance to me at a time when I believed him to be an help. Confused? Let me explain.
