And The Royal Mail Staff Want Public Sympathy?

ThistleWeb's picture

People who go out on strike usually seek public support for their plight, to help add weight to their position over their employers, the Royal Mail are no different. The Royal Mail have a monopoly on some key areas of postal delivery in the UK, which like any other monopoly means "you're stuck with them, for good or ill". It's very hard to feel any sympathy for a company who employs postal delivery staff who are seemingly incapable of reading. I've lost count of the times I've gotten letters not addressed to my house number, even my street name and on the odd occasion town name. I've lost count of how many times I've complained, yet nothing has changed.

Duronic Hybrid Solar / Windup / USB Rechargeable RadioI bought a Duronic rechargeable radio from Amazon which the retailers delivery method of choice was Royal Mail. It turned up today but not by the Royal Mail. Some lady I've never met from way across the other side of the street had it delivered to her instead, and she was kind enough to deliver it to me. I've been asked to take in parcels from the Royal Mail for neighbors I know they haven't been to check are in because I can hear them. I've seen letters dumped inside the communal landing because the postman / woman was either too lazy or trying to finish early to be bothered delivering them directly into letterboxes as is their legal requirement. The letters could be stuff like gas bills, credit cards, bank statements etc All of which are a goldmine to ID thieves. All of which are used as ID to prove you are who you claim to be, as only you could have gotten them. The best part is that because of the special status of the Royal Mail, they're immune from any legal recourse should any ID theft take place. Their fault, but immune from being accountable. Great huh?

You'd imagine that the ability to read would be a must-have skill for someone working for the Royal Mail delivering letters, as they need to read the address on every letter. Apparently it's not. Still, if the job cuts the Royal Mail staff are striking against are those who can't read, they could improve their customer service and get their job cuts through at the same time. It's very hard to feel any sympathy for such incompetence, usually I'd have switched to a different company but well, you know what a monopoly means; no competition.

What I do say is that if it's a parcel I'm sending I won't use the Royal Mail as they do actually have to compete on that front. Sadly with letters there's no choice. I may do a review on the device when I've had a chance to play with it, right now it's still on it's first full USB charge, and the post wasn't about that in particular.
